Sunday Sports Update

Top: Facing one of MLB's doormats may be what helps the New York Yankees snap out of their funk.  On Saturday, the Bronx Bombers defeated the Kansas City Royals 5-2, marking the first time they've won consecutive games since July 3-4.  Giancarlo Stanton (left) drove in three of New York's five runs, including a two-run homer for insurance in the 8th inning.  Meanwhile, the defense turned a very bizarre play in the 4th inning, when Bobby Witt got tagged out (right) attempting to stretch a bunt single into a double.  The ball appeared to roll foul down the third base line, but it was ruled a fair ball when D.J. LeMahieu grabbed it.  He gave the ball to pitcher Gerrit Cole, who fired the ball to shortshop Anthony Volpe to complete the 5-1-6 putout.  Photos by USA Today

Bottom left: Training camps are underway for some NFL teams, and it's just days away for the Buffalo Bills.  Josh Allen and company have made the playoffs in each of the last four NFL seasons, but have fallen short of the Super Bowl each time.  Their quest begins on Wednesday, when the team holds its first practice at St. John Fisher University.  Photo by the Buffalo Bills

Bottom right: A slow start in Round 3 didn't deter Brian Harman in his quest for the Claret Jug.  On Saturday, Harman bogeyed two of his first four holes at Royal Liverpool, but he responded with four birdies in his next nine holes to finish the day at -12, maintaining a five-shot lead at the British Open.  He's aiming for his first major golf championship; the closest he has come was a tie for 2nd place at the 2017 U.S. Open.  Photo by USA Today
