HS Basketball: Fredonia Girls Fall Short in Quarterfinal Clash

The first two meetings of this high school basketball season between the Fredonia and Southwestern girls resulted in convincing wins for the Lady Trojans. Their third meeting on Friday night provided more of the same; only this time, it also meant the end of Fredonia's season. In a game that aired on WDOE, the Lady Billies came up short on the road by a 63-39 score in the Section VI Class B-1 quarterfinals.

While Southwestern (14-7) had a hard time buying a bucket early on, Fredonia (10-11) scored the game's first seven points. However, the Lady Trojans eventually found their game once they got on the board. Fredonia led 10-9 at the end of the 1st quarter before the Lady Trojans took control in the 2nd quarter, with star senior Reece Beaver scoring 10 of her team's 17 points in that period en route to a 26-20 lead at halftime. Southwestern poured it on in the 3rd quarter, outscoring the Lady Billies 22-7 in that stretch behind a 10-point effort from senior Maddie McIntyre. Fredonia could not cut into the deficit in the 4th quarter, as Southwestern booked its place in the Class B-1 semifinals.

Reece Beaver led all scorers with 21 points for Southwestern, while Lauren Cotter and Maddie McIntyre each had 10 points. For Fredonia, seniors Makayla Tabone and Ashlynn had 10 points apiece in their final basketball games in a Fredonia uniform.
