Fredonia Edges Wilson in Baseball Playoffs, Dunkirk Eliminated

The Fredonia High School baseball team began the Section VI playoffs Friday afternoon with a pitcher's duel.  In a rematch of last year's Section VI Class B-2 championship game, the Billies (14-4) came away with the big plays when they mattered, defeating the Lakemen (10-7) by a score of 2-1 in the Class B-2 quarterfinals.  Wilson ace John Bender didn't allow a hit in the first three innings, but Fredonia broke through in the bottom of the 4th, when Trey Swartz knocked a two-out RBI triple for a 1-0 lead.  Wilson responded in the top of the 5th with an RBI single by Brayden Skobjak that tied the game at 1-1, but Fredonia got out of the inning when Jonah Miller popped into a double play.  The Billies bounced back in the bottom of the 5th.  They loaded the bases with nobody out, setting up a sacrifice fly by Reid Tarnowski to give Fredonia a 2-1 lead.  Tarnowski (pictured), who got the start on the mound, surrendered one run and five hits to get the win, while Derrick Walters preserved the win with a two-inning save. Bender went the distance for Wilson, allowing only three hits.  Fredonia moves on to face Tonawanda in the B-2 semifinals on Monday.

Also on Friday, Dunkirk's season came to an end in Alden.  The Marauders (8-13) were held to just two hits in a 6-0 loss to the Bulldogs (12-4) in the Class B-1 quarterfinals.  Lucas Jurek had two singles and two RBI for Alden, while Justin Daucher added a pair of singles and an RBI in the winning effort.  Starting pitcher Tom Bednarski held Dunkirk to just one hit over six innings to get the win.  Jared Glowniak broke up a no-hit bid with a leadoff single in the top of the 6th, while Dunkirk's other hit came from Evon Hernandez.
