Dunkirk High School's softball team entered its Section VI playoff game at Alden on the heels of a 24-run outburst against CSAT. Thursday afternoon, the Lady Marauders were stifled by the pitching of Alden's senior pitcher, Brooke Straughsbaugh. Straughsbaugh gave up only three hits and struck out seven batters as the Lady Bulldogs (13-5) defeated Dunkirk (8-8) by a 4-1 score in the Class B-1 quartefinals, ending the season for the Lady Marauders. The 1st inning proved to be the difference in the game, with Alden scoring three runs on four hits. Sara Pasternack lined a two-run triple to put Alden on the board and later scored on a Brittany Jordon single. The Lady Bulldogs tacked on another run in the 5th, as Anne Kocher scored on throwing errors by Emma Newton and Kymi Nance. Down 4-0, Dunkirk appeared to get a spark in the top of the 6th when Nance belted a two-run home run to right center field. However, the umpires determined that Nance did not touch second base, so she was determined out at second with only one run scoring. After a rough 1st inning, Dunkirk sophomore pitcher Monica Pokoj held Alden to just one hit the rest of the way.
