There's a new development in efforts by Chautauqua County to gain an increase in its sales tax...It must commit to a property tax cut. New York State Senator Cathy Young says that if the county wants to increase the sales tax rate to 8 percent, it will have the lower the tax levy by 3 percent. Young who says a property tax cut has to be part of the language if the legislation has a chance to pass in the State Senate.
Young-Property tax cut must be in the language
Young says she is looking at the feasibility of requiring a 3 percent property tax levy decrease as part of the legislation. That would translate into a $2 million property tax cut for Chautauqua County residents. The Olean Republican told us that even with the language change, it would not be an easy process. County Executive Vince Horrigan is seeking the increase to help close a structural deficit and to help lower the county's property tax rate.
