Navajo Code Talkers Program
Thursday, September 28 2017 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM
Janet Wahlberg will be presenting a historical presentation on the Navajo Code Talkers titled “Winds of Freedom”. The term Code Talker was first used during WWI in Europe when Choctaw Nation men were asked to transmit messages in their language to keep the enemy from learning what the American plans were. Early in WWII a more formalized plan was devised using the Native Navajo language as it is considered one of the most complex in the world. The Navajo’s spent time coding the already complex Navajo language to make it even more difficult for the enemy to decipher. The Navajo Code Talkers were deployed primarily in the Pacific Theater of the war. These men are credited with helping to win the Battle for Iwo Jima and saving many lives as the enemy never broke the Code. They returned from war with the instruction to never tell anyone what they had done and many took the secret to their grave.
