The Chautauqua County Health Department, on behalf of the Village of Fredonia, has issued a water conservation order for all Fredonia water customers, beginning at midnight Saturday until further notice. The conservation order also includes customers who live outside the village in the Town of Pomfret. During a public information panel this week at the Fredonia Opera House, Health Department water specialist Natalie Whiteman said that the village would begin treatment at the system's clearwell on Monday in an attempt to avoid having a boil water order issued...

Customers will receive water from the treatment plant's water storage tank during the scheduled maintenance. Health officials say if the storage tank is depleted, water will have to come directly from the water treatment plant. The required maintenance will result in high turbidity at the plant, so water leaving the plant will not be adequately disinfected. If this occurs, customers will be notified and ordered to boil water so that it is safe to consume.
Before midnight, residents are encouraged to safely store their own tap water ahead of time or purchase bottled water in the event of a boil order. Health officials say tap water should be used only as is essential for daily needs. The maintenance at the plant may take multiple days to complete.
