John P. Green, 68, of Fredonia passed away peacefully following a courageous battle with cancer Tuesday evening, June 17, 2025, with his loving family by his side. He was born in Dunkirk on January 19, 1957, husband of Elizabeth (Sevola) Green and son of the late Ernest and Marilyn (Patton) Green.
A graduate of Fredonia High School, Class of 1975, John furthered his education by earning an Associate's degree from Alfred Agriculture and Tech in 1977.
John served with unwavering commitment as a professional firefighter for many years for the Fredonia Fire Department, where he was known for his bravery and dedication. In addition to his work as a firefighter, John served as an EMT for Alstar EMS, where he continued to exemplify his dedication to helping others in critical moments. Beyond these roles, John worked for his dear friend Steve St. George at S. St. George Enterprises, Inc.
John was a man of simple, easy-going nature, a personality that endeared him to many. He loved helping others and had a remarkable talent for storytelling. He also had a repertoire of dad jokes that never failed to elicit smiles and laughter.
His most cherished moments were spent with family and friends, particularly in his garage alongside his beloved dog, Lexi, and his brother, Joel. Many will fondly remember the hours spent in his garage, a beloved haven for good company and conversation.
In his leisure time, John found joy in various hobbies, including crossword puzzles, camping, and visiting Coughlan's Pub to check the mail. He was also a Buffalo Bills fan.
Memberships include Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church and the Fredonia Beaver Club.
John is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Elizabeth (Sevola) Green, whom he married on September 1, 1979; children, Michael (Tricia) Green, Kristen Green and Stephen (Abigail) Green; grandchildren, Patton, Jackson, Garret and Claire Green; siblings, Timothy (Patricia) Green, Leigh (Michelle) Green, Patricia (Andrew) Green, Nicholas (Laurie) Green, Daniel (Diane) Green, Cynthia (Roger) Britz, Anne (David) Hunt, Gretchen (Jim) Langdon, Diana (Peter) Villagomez, Georgia Green and Joel (Bridget) Green; nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Lexi. In addition to his parents, John is preceded in death by his sister, Kyle McMullen.
Relatives and friends are welcome to attend calling hours on Friday, June 20 from 4:00-7:00 PM at the McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home, 736 Central Avenue in Dunkirk. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, June 21 at 10:00 AM at Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, 1032 Central Avenue in Dunkirk. Interment will be held in St. Anthony's Cemetery.
