Jessie B. Lockett

Jessie B. Lockett, also known as "Butoe," passed away on Tuesday May 27, 2025 at her home after a lengthy illness. She was born in Leesburg, GA on August 23, 1950 to the late Oliver Moreland and Elizabeth Lockett.

In 1962, Jessie moved to Dunkirk and attended the Dunkirk Public Schools. She began working for Fredonia State College and gave 30 years of service to the college before retiring.

In 1997, she joined the Good Hope Missionary Baptist Church. She served faithfully as the head cook for church programs and sang in the choir. Jessie enjoyed being around family and friends, cooking, playing bingo, listening to music like oldies, and gospel music. Her favorite gospel song was "Rough Side of the Mountain" by F. C. Barnes. Her favorite R&B song was "Step in the Name of Love" by R. Kelly. She had a heart of gold, always helping others when needed.

She leaves to cherish her memories two sons, Douglas and Vincent (Elly) Lockett of Dunkirk; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She also leaves to cherish her memories nine sisters: Gladys Lockett, Alberta Hardwick Gilyard, Rosie Hardwick, Jeanle (Jerome) Hill, Betty Nealy, Mary Trotter, Martha Moreland, Diane (Robert) Torres, and Rosie (Howard) James. Two sisters-in-law: Peaches Thomas, and Alberta Lockett. Eight Brothers: Thaddeus Lockett, Dennis Lockett, Willie Fred Lockett, Ronn Moreland, Willie Moreland, Sam Moreland, Jerry Moreland and Leroy Moreland. A host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Oliver Moreland and Elizabeth Lockett; grandparents, Gussie M. and V. Thomas; sisters, Emma Sneed and Annie Lois Moreland; brothers, Johnny Lockett, Jimmy Lockett, David Lee Thomas, James Moreland, and an infant brother.
