JPS Approves Timeline for High School Mascot Name Change

The Jamestown Public Schools Board of Education has okayed the district's transition timeline for a new high school mascot nickname. The plan, which was approved by board members during their meeting last week, will now be sent to the New York State Education Department. The community is now invited to offer feedback and suggestions for the new mascot name by going to the JPS website. The survey will be open until Friday, June 30th.

According to the plan, there will be an open forum throughout the month of June with students conducted to include background information, education, discussion, and a survey for students to provide their opinions. The committee will also add new student members and poll students, community members, and parents on potential new nicknames. The committee will then conduct follow-up meetings in July and August to discuss the open forums and survey results and conduct surveys to narrow down the list of possible new names. The committee will then aim to make a recommendation to the Board of Education and detail a specific timeline for a new name by December 2023.
