The Annual Laurel Memorial Run & Walk will be taking place Saturday, July 17 in Silver Creek. The yearly run will be celebrating its 25th year after starting up in 1997. The event this year will be back to in-person after last year's event was completely virtual. According to event founder Wayne Hotelling, there was a scramble to get the event together this year due to the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions just weeks ago...

The event was founded by Wayne and his wife Elaine as a "celebration of achievements of people with disabilities" in honor of his daughter Laurel, who had Down Syndrome. Steve Waterson, a spokesperson for The Resource Center, spoke about how this isn't just a celebration, but also raises awareness for those with disabilities...

Registration is available online for the event, and there is an option for a virtual run this year as well. The race includes a 5k run and 1k walk and also an 8k race with prizes going to the top three finishers in the male and female category. There is also a relay run across Chautauqua County on Friday, July 16, with the run ending at the Resource Center location in Dunkirk.
