Defense was the name of the game for both Fredonia and Chautauqua Lake-Westfield-Brocton in Friday night's high school football clash at the Orange Bowl. In a game broadcast on WDOE, the visiting Eagles had the more stifling defense, while their offense generated enough big plays in a 21-0 shutout of the Hillbillies.
In the 1st quarter, CWB (4-3, 3-2) drove inside the Fredonia 20-yard line twice, but turned the ball over on downs both times. However, early in the 2nd quarter, the Eagles broke the deadlock with a big play through the air. Josh Swan lofted a pass for Ian Kindermann, who made a leaping catch over Ryan Johnson and kept his footing for a 65-yard touchdown and a 7-0 lead. CWB's offense continued to threaten in the 3rd quarter, but two turnovers deep in Fredonia (3-4, 2-4) territory kept it a one-score game. Late in the quarter, the Billies committed a turnover on downs inside their own 30, and that led to a seven-play scoring drive for CWB, ending with a 2-yard touchdown run by Tristen Gibbs with 8:51 left. The Eagles punctuated the win when Thandon Bensink ran 55 yards for a touchdown on their next drive, sending Fredonia to its third straight loss and putting the Eagles back into a Class C playoff spot.
Also on Friday, Dunkirk notched its second win of the season by defeating East Aurora 34-14 in a Class B-2 matchup at Karl Hoeppner Field. The Marauders trailed 14-7 at halftime before rallying for four unanswered touchdowns in the second half.
