The National Comedy Center has acquired one of the most significant collections of original "I Love Lucy" production material to emerge in decades. The Comedy Center's announcement on Thursday comes on the 75th anniversary of the show's premiere. The collection includes hundreds of rare, previously unseen behind-the-scenes photographs, Lucy and Desi's personally owned 35mm film prints of the series, and a rare original script draft representing the earliest known revisions to the formative "I Love Lucy" pilot episode. The photographs offer an intimate view of the day-to-day working environment of one of Hollywood's earliest and most influential television production facilities.
The National Comedy Center is unveiling selections from this substantial collection publicly for the first time with a new exhibition at its Lucille Ball-Desi Arnaz Museum in Jamestown planned for 2027. All of these historically important materials will reside at the museum, where they will be preserved and shared with audiences for generations to come.
"I Love Lucy" premiered on CBS on October 15, 1951, starring Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz as Lucy and Ricky Ricardo, with Vivian Vance and William Frawley as Ethel and Fred Mertz. 75 years later, its influence and popularity endure. In 2023, Variety named "I Love Lucy" the No. 1 greatest television show of all time, recognizing a series whose impact on television, comedy and American culture continues across generations.
