SUNY Fredonia Professor's Works Selected for International Exhibition

Two works created by a Fredonia theatre professor will be part of an upcoming international exhibition. Czerton Lim, professor of theatrical production and design in the Department of Theatre and Dance, had two of his recent scenic designs selected for inclusion in the U.S. National Exhibit this June as part of the 2027 Prague Quadrennial (PQ). The event takes place at the newly renovated Prague Exhibition Grounds in Prague, Czechia, as part of the main international exhibition from June 8-17.

The U.S. exhibit for Prague Quadrennial 2027 is titled "E Pluribus Unum: Scenographic Fragments of an American Mosaic." The goal of the exhibition is to celebrate the "artistry, complexity, and contradictions of a nation assembled from many origins. Like the varied tesserae of a vast mosaic, the designers and theatre makers of the United States bring traditions, histories, and imaginations together to form a larger picture: whole, dynamic, and always evolving." Lim's designs that were selected are from "Clue," a co-production with Indiana Repertory Theatre and Syracuse Stage in 2023, and Disney's "Frozen" at Syracuse Stage this past May.

For both projects, Fredonia graduate Donnie Woodard (Theatrical Production and Design BFA 2022) served as Lim's associate scenic designer.

According to PQ, the U.S. exhibition will “showcase a wide range of design practices — from experimental and emerging voices to the artistry of Broadway, to the vision of foreign-born designers who have made the United States their artistic home. Together, these works reveal the living mosaic of American scenography: large and small, traditional and innovative, rooted and migratory, local and global."

Lim, who has been at Fredonia since 2014, is a member of United Scenic Artist local 829, a national labor union and professional association representing visual designers, artists, craftspeople, and department coordinators in the entertainment and decorative arts industries. He serves as the managing producer for both the Walter Gloor Mainstage Series and the New Works Series by the Fredonia Department of Theatre and Dance.

Originally from the Philippines, Lim emigrated to the U.S. in the mid-1980s and now calls New York his home.

Founded in 1967, the Prague Quadrennial has become the world’s largest platform for performance design and scenography, bringing together artists, scholars, students, and audiences every four years to experience design as a live, spatial, and performative practice. 2027 will be the 16th edition and 60th anniversary of the PQ and will be held in the newly renovated Prague Exhibition Grounds in the Czech Republic.
