A Jamestown man has been arrested after an investigation into an assault at a residence on the city's east side early Wednesday. Jamestown Police responded to the scene shortly after 12:45 AM and determined that 29-year-old Austin Thayer had allegedly injured the victim by striking him in the head with a hammer, causing a severe laceration. Officers located Thayer inside, and as they were trying to take him into custody, he allegedly tried to ingest a suspected controlled substance before throwing it into a toilet. Thayer was taken into custody without further incident, and officers located a quantity of fentanyl during an inventory of his property. Thayer was transported to the Jamestown City Jail and held pending arraignment on charges of 2nd-degree assault, 3rd-degree criminal possession of a weapon, 7th-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, and tampering with physical evidence.
