For the second week in a row, the Dunkirk High School football team was beleaguered by early turnovers and an offense that could not move the ball downfield. In a game broadcast on WDOE Friday night, the Marauders' woes continued as they got shut out by Pioneer by a 35-0 score in a Class B-2 matchup in Yorkshire.
It did not take long for Dunkirk (0-2, 0-2) to fall behind. On the game's first play, Pioneer (2-0, 2-0) recovered a Matt Dolce fumble, and the Panthers turned it into points three plays later as Cole Schlueter found the end zone on a 5-yard run. The next Marauder possession also ended with a turnover; Carson Matyjasik picked off a Dolce pass and returned it to the Dunkirk 31-yard line, and two plays later, Isaac Platt scored a touchdown to extend the Panther lead to 14-0 just 3:28 into the contest. Late in the first half, the advantage grew to 21-0 as Pioneer drove 51 yards in nine plays. Fullback Ryker Waite capped the march with a 2-yard touchdown run. Late in the 3rd quarter, Dunkirk committed its third turnover when Jordan Thomas-Smith dropped a lateral in his own end zone, and Tristan McKerrow recovered for a touchdown. The Marauders gave the ball right back on the next play, when Evan Wright intercepted an Aries Cheverez pass. Drew George ended the ensuing Pioneer drive with a quarterback sneak for a touchdown with 9:11 remaining.
Dunkirk managed only three first downs and 30 yards of offense while committing four turnovers. Pioneer junior Brock Youngs had a big game defensively with four sacks.
