Gillibrand Seeks Full Repeal and Refund of Trump Tariffs

Two U.S. senators, including New York's Kirsten Gillibrand, are planning to introduce legislation that would repeal all tariffs levied under Section 338 of the Tariff Act and also refund Americans for all duties paid under that authority, including the 50% tariffs recently imposed on Canada. This week, Gillibrand and Vermont Democrat Peter Welch announced the Banning Antiquated Duties and Delivering Equitable American Levies (BAD DEAL) Act, which they will officially introduce when the Senate is back in session in September. Gillibrand says a trade war with Canada will be detrimental to New York's economy, noting that Canada is one of the state's largest export markets for both goods and services. She says families in New York have spent more than $5,000 due to tariffs and other "reckless" policies by the Trump Administration. Canada is pledging dollar-for-dollar retaliatory tariffs slated to come into effect after Labor Day.
