Local Cops, Local Crimes Act Takes Effect

Local law enforcement agencies in New York are no longer legally allowed to be involved in federal civil immigration enforcement activities. On Tuesday, Governor Kathy Hochul announced the implementation of the Local Cops, Local Crimes Act, which she signed into law in May as a part of a comprehensive package of immigration measures. It bans 287(g) agreements between local agencies and ICE. Hochul says it keeps local police focused on keeping communities safe instead of carrying out what she called the Trump Administration's "callous" immigration agenda...

Kathy Hochul: ICE's tactics evoke fear

She says local police are allowed to assist ICE "only if a real crime has been committed." Meanwhile, 15 county sheriffs across New York have filed a lawsuit challenging the ban on 287(g) agreements with ICE. In a joint statement, Hochul and Attorney General Letitia James called the lawsuit "nothing but a frivolous waste of taxpayer dollars."
