
An inmate at the Collins Correctional Facility died as the result of an altercation Tuesday night. The New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) notified the State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation about the incident at about 11:00 PM. According to troopers, a preliminary investigation revealed that one inmate attacked a second inmate in the prison's Residential Rehabilitation Unit, resulting in serious physical injury. The incarcerated victim, later identified as 34-year-old Jose Aponte, was sent to Bertrand Chaffee Hospital in Springville and pronounced dead after life-saving measures were taken. The DOCCS Office of Special Investigations is assisting with this case. The New York State Attorney General's Office was also notified and responded to the scene.
