Today is the federal holiday of Juneteenth, which commemorates the day when the last slaves in the United States learned in 1865 that they were free. In recognition of the holiday, most federal, state and local government offices will be closed, as well as banks and post offices. In Dunkirk, Mayor Kate Wdowiasz has issued a proclamation in recognition of Juneteenth. The city held its 30th annual Juneteenth celebration last weekend.
