Dunkirk saw its exceptional high school baseball season come to a close over the weekend. On Saturday, in a game broadcast on WDOE, the Class A-2 champion Marauders got pummeled by Class A-1 champion Amherst by an 18-0 score in just five innings for the overall Section VI Class A title at Frontier High School.
Through two innings, Dunkirk (19-4) was outplayed but trailed by only a 1-0 score. Amherst (14-8) broke the game open with a five-run 3rd inning, with Danny Gardner's two-run double highlighting the inning for the Tigers. The damage continued in the 4th inning, as the Marauders surrendered eight more runs. Amherst finished off the contest with five runs in the 5th inning to advance to next weekend's New York State Class A Far West Regional.
The Marauders used six different pitchers in the game. Starter Anthony Cosme threw 2+ innings on the hill and allowed four runs on three hits and six walks. Offensively, Dunkirk managed five hits. Seniors Greg Orcutt, Paul Trippy and Gabe Valentine each knocked a single in their final varsity baseball appearances. Josh Lemanski and Anthony Piede also had hits in the losing effort.
