Dunkirk Man Charged in Thursday Shooting

A Dunkirk man has been charged after an investigation into a shooting that occurred Thursday evening in the city. Dunkirk Police responded to several 911 calls reporting an altercation with shots fired in the area of East 5th Street and Columbus Avenue shortly after 9:30 PM. Witkowski says a search warrant executed at a residence in the immediate area resulted in the location and recovery of a loaded pistol that was allegedly used by 41-year-old Luis Sanchez, Jr., who is accused of firing several rounds during the incident...

The pistol also contained an illegal high-capacity magazine. Sanchez was taken to Dunkirk Police headquarters and booked on charges of 2nd- and 3rd-degree criminal possession of a weapon, 1st-degree reckless endangerment, and unlawful discharge of a firearm. He was later arraigned in Dunkirk City Court and remanded to the Chautauqua County Jail on $10,000 bail. The Dunkirk Police Detective Bureau, Southern Tier Regional Drug Task Force, Fredonia Police Department and Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office assisted patrol officers in the investigation.
