Spring trout fishing season got underway across New York State on Monday, and some local BOCES students helped ensure that plenty of rainbow and brown trout are stocked in popular fishing spots. Conservation students in Chris Hy's and Jeff Angeletti's classes at the Hewes Educational Center in Ashville recently took turns dropping bucketfuls of trout into the water at six different locations on Goose Creek in the Town of North Harmony.
Hy says, "We do this to help increase and maintain the fish population in our creeks and the lake. This way, the fish can spawn, and hopefully, we'll have a healthy amount of fish in our lakes."
The yearly effort is part of a collaboration between Erie 2-Chautauqua-Cattaraugus BOCES, the New York State DEC and the Lakewood Rod & Gun Club. The Lakewood organization supports the local BOCES Conservation/Natural Resource Management program, and the DEC oversees the release of the trout. As in past years, the fish came from the Randolph Fish Hatchery.
