Leonard F. Kupkowski, 60, of Lancaster, formerly of Dunkirk, died unexpectedly Thursday afternoon, January 12, 2023 at home. He was born on August 14, 1962 in Buffalo, the son of the late Leonard F. and Marilyn A. (Albrecht) Kupkowski.
A resident of Dunkirk for most of his life, Leonard was a graduate of Dunkirk High School, Class of 1980. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1980-1984 and the New York Army National Guard from 1986-1995.
Leonard served for 25 years as a member of East Dunkirk Fire Department and was currently a member of the Village of Lancaster Fire Department. He was a certified New York State EMT for over 30 years and a former member of the Chautauqua County HAZMAT Team and the Fredonia Fire Department. He was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ in Dunkirk.
His brothers and sisters in fire fighting, his friends and colleagues will remember his passion for serving others, for sharing his knowledge and for leaving a lasting impression. Leonard found joy in brewing beer, fishing, camping, his dog Coco and spending time with family and friends.
Leonard is survived by his wife, Jennifer M. Whittington; his sister, Mari Ellen (Ginger) Szwejbka; along with several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and cousins.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, January 20 from 4:00-7:00 PM at St. John's United Church of Christ, 733 Central Avenue in Dunkirk. A memorial service will be held immediately after the calling hours at 7:00 PM. Pastor Zoe Milliman will officiate. Full Military Honors will be accorded by the Dunkirk Joint Veterans Council Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to St. John's UCC, the East Dunkirk Fire Department, or the Lancaster Fire Department.
