David L. Dewey, 83, of Dunkirk died Wednesday evening, August 3, 2022 at St. Vincent Hospital in Erie, PA after a long a courageous battle. He was born on May 2, 1939 in North Harmony, son of Marjorie (Spinks) and Perry Dewey, both deceased.

David is survived a sister, Doris (Dewey) and brother-in-law, Perry Beckerink; a son, Tyler Dewey and daughter-in-law, Ashley (Busse) Dewey; daughters, Tammi (Dewey) and Michael Gunther and Mary Elizabeth Dewey; grandchildren, Dora Palmer, Brianna Dewey, John Dewey, Caitlin Dewey, Alexis Cline and Wyatt Cline; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Roberta J. Dewey (Dombrowski) who passed away on March 24, 2022; a brother, Perry Dewey, Sr. (wife Betty survives); sister, Debbie (Dewey) McCown; and brother-in-law, Gary McCown.

David L. Dewey was an avid Buffalo Bills fan with more merchandise than one could imagine. In his younger days, he loved to bowl with his buddies, often taking home some trophies.

Dave loved to garden, collecting any plants he could that would offer the most spectacular blooms. Often, one would see him sitting on his porch, drinking his coffee and watching all his beloved birds come to visit. David loved to frequent coffee shops, enjoying a strong brew and socializing with friends, family and even strangers. Always offering a smile and a listening ear, laughs appreciated and often given. He truly was the kindest and most friendly person anyone could meet. Dave was always willing to listen to your days, good or bad, he listened.

Besides gardening, he absolutely loved antiques. As children, we often traveled to yard sales and antique shops. Our home growing up was full of items from the past, furnishings someone took time to create hoping their creations would be loved and appreciated for many years to come. Dad loved that about antiques. Made with pride, uniqueness and care.

In his younger years, one wouldn't be surprised to see him dancing to anything that had a beat, especially hitting the dance floor to a polka with his beloved wife, Roberta. Dave loved a cold beer and maybe a shot of whiskey here and there. Nothing hit the spot than a occasional cold beer.

David was a member of the Dunkirk Moose Lodge for many years, volunteering as a door greeter. He would make sure everyone was happy with their meals and move from table to table for some laughs. He was also a member of the Fredonia Beaver Club.

David was the strongest most caring little guy anyone could ever meet. He was a fighter to the end. He did it his way. We lost an amazing example how we all should live, how we all should treat each other. He wanted people to love one another, be kind and be good. Appreciate and help each other, no matter the obstacles. Some things don't matter. People matter. Dad would say life is short, enjoy all that comes, but be sure to be nice.

The family of David Dewey would like to thank all the nurses and doctors at St. Vincent Hospital in Erie, PA, an amazing team that truly grew to love dad. The care they gave our dad was heartwarming. Thank you.

We also would like to thank all his friends and family near and far that offered prayers throughout the years with his illnesses. He loved hearing so many were praying for him and thinking of him. We always said he was fine and getting better, don’t worry. Your love and kindness for our dad will never be forgotten.

Calling hours will be held on Monday, August 8 from 3:00-7:00 PM at the McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home, 736 Central Avenue in Dunkirk. A memorial service will be held immediately after the calling hours at 7:00 PM. The Rev. Daniel P. Walsh will officiate.

Memorials may be made to the Lakeshore Humane Society, 431 East Chestnut Street, Dunkirk, NY 14048.

Now dad/grandpa, enjoy forever peace and freedom with your beloved Roberta, watch over us all. Until we meet again. We love you.
