Fredonia Central School's student newspaper, the Spectator, recently won a total of 14 awards at the 85th annual Empire State School Press Association (ESSPA) conference at Syracuse University's Newhouse School of Public Communications. ESSPA recognizes excellent scholastic journalism from student journalists across New York State. Schools submit to categories regardless of school size, and in some cases, publication type. The newspaper received two Gold awards -- one for Best Written Work in a Newspaper and Best Feature Story. It also picked up Silver awards for Best Newspaper, Service to School, Representation in Media, Best Photograph, Best Sports Coverage, and two for Best Sports Story. Three Bronze awards were issued -- two for Best Editorial and one for Best Artwork (portfolio). And the newspaper received two Honorable Mention awards for Best Photograph and Best Sports Story.
