Jamestown BPU Places First for Small Companies in WNY Healthiest Employer Contest

For the fifth year in a row, the Jamestown Board of Public Utilities has been recognized as the first place finalist among a group of four small-size companies competing in the Western New York Healthiest Employer contest, including Arbeit, Harper International and YMCA Buffalo Niagara. The announcement was made recently in Buffalo by contest sponsors Buffalo Business First, Springbuk, Best Self Behavioral Health, Independent Health, Wegmans and Walsh Duffield.

The distinction qualifies the BPU program to compete in the Healthiest 100 Workplaces in America contest. The BPU placed in the top 100 of that national challenge each of the last three years.

The mostly employee-led BPU Health and Wellness Program is designed to get as many employees involved as possible to improve the overall health of the workforce. The BPU employs 150 workers, and about a dozen employees with other full-time jobs in the organization, volunteering to create and administer the wellness plan.

The program includes biometric screenings, individual health challenges, online courses and lunch and learns throughout the calendar year. Employees earn wellness points for participation in activities such as doctor wellness visits, vaccinations and dental and vision appointments. Healthy snacks are sold in the facilities instead of the previous sale of candy. Employees share healthy recipes and garden produce in some of the buildings. The group has hosted "Wellness Days" and presented special opportunities for employees to participate in workplace courses such as diabetes prevention and weight loss. The program includes spouses and retirees on the BPU's health insurance who choose to participate.

At year-end, participants' wellness points qualify the employees, spouses and retirees to earn financial compensation.
