Saturday Sports Update
Top: Ever since the NCAA men's basketball tournament expanded to a 64-team field in 1985, the 1 seeds have gone undefeated against 16 seeds in the opening round of the Big Dance. That is, until Friday night. Enter the University of Maryland-Baltimore County. The Retrievers, who needed a last-second three-pointer to beat Vermont just to get into the tourney, opened up a can on Virginia, the top-ranked team in the country. UMBC, a 20-point underdog, made it rain in Charlotte, scoring 53 points in the second half against arguably the stingiest defense in the nation and stunned the Cavaliers 74-54. Bottom left: Speaking of upsets, Buffalo had one of its own on Thursday by taking down Arizona 89-68 in the opening round of the tournament. This afternoon in Boise, another traditional hoops powerhouse awaits the Bulls, as they take on Kentucky in Round 2. Tip-off is at 5:15 PM; a trip to the Sweet 16 is at stake. Bottom right: Buffalo Bills GM Brandon Beane speaks with reporters during a news conference on Friday at One Bills Drive. Beane discussed the team's recent moves, including the trade of Tyrod Taylor to Cleveland and the acquisition of A.J. McCarron from Cincinnati. While many feel the Bills will go after a quarterback with two 1st-round draft picks at their disposal, Beane says he is keeping his options open, and that includes having McCarron compete for a starting spot.
