Samuel D. Castellano

Samuel D. Castellano, age 77, of Frederick Street, Gowanda passed away at home surrounded by family early Monday morning, May 21, 2018. He was born November 12, 1940, the son of Samuel S. and Mariam Castellano.

Sam had a 48-year career in law enforcement. He started as Chief Constable for the Village of Perrysburg in 1964 and finished the Official Police Academy training and certification in 1979. Officer Castellano worked as a patrolman for various townships in the area, including the Town of Sheridan, Village of Cassadaga, and the Village of Cattaraugus at various times. Officer Sam was hired as a police patrolman for the Village of Gowanda on January 8, 1985. He subsequently was appointed Officer in Charge on December 30, 1994, a position he held until 2001. Chief Castellano also worked as a deputy with the Cattaraugus County Sheriff's Department. Chief Castellano was a dedicated officer to the Village of Gowanda until his retirement in 2012.

Chief Castellano received a proclamation from the Mayor on January 21, 2012 as Samuel Castellano Official Retirement Day.

Sam also was very involved with the Perrysburg Fire Department.

Survivors include his wife, the former Carla Orth; children, Douglas (Joan) Castellano of Angola, Samuel (Pam) Castellano of South Dayton, Tonya (Michael) Crouse of Gowanda and Ryan (Ashley Jadlowski) Castellano, also of Gowanda. 15 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, along with several nieces and nephews, also survive. Besides his parents, Sam was preceded in death by three sisters, JoAnne Castellano Harper, Sandra Castellano and Barbara Castellano.

Friends may call at the Schindler Funeral Home, 44 Center Street, Gowanda (716) 532-4200 from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm on Friday, May 25. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, May 26 at 11 am from St. Joseph's RC Church, East Main Street, Gowanda (please assemble at church). Interment to follow in the Collins Center Cemetery.
