Verna E. Sprague, 94, of Versailles passed away Sunday, March 18, 2018 at Bertrand Chaffee Hospital in Springville. She was born April 8, 1923, the daughter of the late Arthur and Martha (Maringer) Smith.
On June 30, 1947 she married Edward "Ted" Sprague, Jr. who predeceased her on August 21, 2015.
Mrs. Sprague was a stay-at-home mom before she and her husband started Sprague's General Store in Versailles, which they ran together for many years.
She was a member of the Versailles Community Association, Versailles Fireman's Auxiliary, and the Home Bureau. She had attended St. Joseph's RC Church in Gowanda and Holy Spirit RC Church in North Collins. She enjoyed crafting and quilting.
Mrs. Sprague is survived by four sons, Dr. Edward (Chris) Sprague III of Machias, Robert (Marlene) Sprague of Orchard Park, Gary (Susanne) Sprague of Versailles and James (Diane) Sprague of Williamsville; a daughter, Marlene (Wayne) Lyon of Perrysburg; 14 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three sisters, Lois (Louis) George of Eagle, Arlene Holts of Chaffee and Carol (Earl) Long of Versailles; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call on Thursday, March 22 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. from the Mentley Funeral Home Inc., 105 East Main Street in Gowanda. A Mass of Christian Burial will be said on Friday, March 23 at 11 a.m. from St. Joseph's RC Church in Gowanda. Burial will be in Versailles Cemetery.
