Lawrence L. Ackerman

Lawrence L. "Larry" Ackerman, age 90, formerly of Westfield and Mayville, died Wednesday, January 17, 2018 at the Chautauqua Nursing and Rehab Center in Dunkirk, following an extended illness.

Larry was born on May 25, 1927 in Bolivar, the son of the late Elmer and Ethel (Cartwright) Ackerman. He was a 1948 graduate of Bolivar High School and served in the U.S. Navy during both WWII and the Korean War from 1945 until his honorable discharge in 1952.

A resident of Westfield since 1949, Larry came here as a meat cutter for Quality Markets and had been the market manager from 1952-1964. He retired from Renold, Inc. in 1989 as customer service manager after 25 years of service there.

Larry was an active member of the community, having been involved with and a past president of the Jaycees, the Lions Club, and the Kiwanis Club. He had been Vice President of the Westfield Chamber of Commerce, a Cub Master of Troop 28, a member of the Citizen's Hose Co. #2 and the Hook and Ladder Co. of the Fire Department of Westfield, was a former member of the Rescue Squad and a member of the Fireman's Exempt Association. Larry was on the Board of Managers for the Edgewater Condominiums and had served as their President. He belonged to the Mayville Senior Citizens and was a life member of the Mayville American Legion. Larry had wintered in Myrtle Beach, SC for many years and enjoyed golf and being around his friends and family. He was an avid Buffalo Bills fan with a sharp eye for bad calls and a belief that they would return to the playoffs and Super Bowl.

He is survived by one daughter, Karen Ackerman of Shoreview, MN; and two sons, Jeffrey J. Ackerman of Fredonia and Richard L. Ackerman of Parker, CO. Larry was the very proud grandfather of Corey, Jason, Erin, Mathew and Kelley Ackerman. He also had two great-grandchildren, Ryder and Hudson Hamilton. He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Margaret W. (Work) Ackerman, whom he married on July 1, 1950 and who died on September 4, 2001; as well as by his two brothers, Erwin and Vern Ackerman; and by his five sisters, Bertha Studley, Neva Studley, Wilma Bartlett, Winona Price and Patricia Skiver.

Friends may call at the Mason Funeral Home, 37 Clinton St., Westfiel on Friday, January 26 from 5:00-7:00 PM and are invited to attend his funeral services there on Saturday, January 27 at 1:00 PM, with Rev. Ron Skowronski officiating. Burial will be in Portland Evergreen Cemetery.
