Ellen Ann Dingledy

Mrs. Ellen Ann (Owen) Dingledy, 95, of Fredonia died Thursday, November 16, 2017.

She was married to Dr. David P. Dingledy (1988), a professor of chemistry at SUNY Fredonia. A beloved mother of eight children, grandmother to eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, she will be greatly missed.

Ellen was born in Newark, OH on September 28, 1922, the daughter of Richard and Lillian (Larason) Owen. She grew up on a farm on Sharon Valley Road in the Welsh Hills of Licking County, OH. At four years of age, her mother died from influenza. Subsequently, her father and two maiden aunts, Mary and Libby Owen, raised her and her four sisters. She had fond memories of farm life near an extended family and a trip with aunts to Yellowstone and Pike's Peak.

Ellen graduated with a major in elementary education from Ohio State University. She was employed at Owen's Corning in Newark, where she met her husband. In 1962, David received his doctorate in physical chemistry from OSU, and they moved to Fredonia.

She played bridge with the Faculty Dames organization, attended music and cultural events, and was a member of Another Mother for Peace during the Vietnam War. She enjoyed traveling with her husband to visit their children and to Hawaii, California, and Florida. Her favorite destination was Point Gratiot in Dunkirk for her daily walk with her son Richard along the shores of Lake Erie. She loved to watch the children, dogs, and beautiful sunsets.

Her family will always treasure her wisdom, sense of humor, and unconditional love.

Ellen is survived by seven children, David (Janice) Dingledy of Holbrook, MA, Kathryn (William Phillips) Dingledy of Brocton, Mary Dingledy of Brooklyn, Cecilia (Todd) Dingledy-Wade of Rochester, MN, Richard Dingledy of Fredonia, Frederick (Sheryl) Dingledy of Greensboro, NC and Joseph Dingledy of Jamestown. She was preceded in death by her husband, David; four sisters, Martha Beery, Hannah Hutchinson, Sarah Baker and Mildred Patton; and a daughter Ann (Louis) Dingledy-Rodie of Eugene, OR.

There will be a private family service. Memorials can be directed to the Dr. David P. Dingledy Memorial Fund-Physical Chemistry through the Fredonia College Foundation, 272 Central Ave., Fredonia, NY 14063-1104.
