Dean C. Marky

Dean C. Marky, 66, of Hanford Bay, Silver Creek, NY died suddenly of natural causes on Thursday evening, September 15, 2017 at his residence. He was born on August 16, 1951 in Buffalo, the devoted son of the late George L. Marky and Frances C. (Preston) Marky.

Dean was a son and ultimately caretaker of the late William and Edith (Lance) Podd to their final days. Their generosity to the Marky family and his dedication to them will never be forgotten.

A lifelong area resident, Dean graduated from Kenmore West High School, Class of 1969, where he was a member of the rifle club and stage crew. He worked at the Center for Research in Special Environments Lab at SUNY Buffalo until his retirement as the operations manager. He was also a virtual fixture at the Buffalo Gun Center for many decades.

Dean was known for his vast intellect and sharp mind. Those intrepid souls who chose to engage in a battle of wits with him were soon reminded of one of Dean's favorite sayings, "Don't bring a knife to a gun fight." He was an avid automotive, motor boat, and gun enthusiast and was a strong defender of the Second Amendment and lifetime member of the NRA.

Dean lived on Lake Erie most of his life, where he taught generations how to swim, water ski, scuba, fish, shoot, start (or put out) a camp fire properly, and how to drive boats, cars or jet skis. Everything he was involved with was always done with an uncompromising emphasis on safety.

Dean was known to take his activities to their most scientific level, which was enhanced by his love of sporting gear and all things electronic. As examples, as a toddler, he was known to occasionally sleep with a power drill rather than a teddy bear; and when he was about four years old, he took his baby sister for a "walk" in her buggy only to return shortly with a 5-horsepower Johnson outboard after a "trade" with a neighbor. He was furious when told he had to trade it back for her and humorously maintained it had been one of his better deals.

Dean stayed well informed on topics ranging from history, politics, sciences, current events and cultural topics ranging from World War history to "Prairie Home Companion" on NPR. Dean will live on in his many erudite quotes or exchanges that left one either smiling, thinking, or at least better informed.

Dean is survived by his mother, Frances Marky of Lockport; three sisters, Diane Marky of Beaverton, OR, Susan (Robert) Vasko of Lockport and Sandy (Harry Flatt) Marky, DVM of Medina; and "N+1" nephews, Ryan (Cassandra Partridge) Vasko and Eric (Victoria) Vasko. He will also be deeply missed by the friends and family and neighbors with whom he interacted.

As per Dean's wishes, there will be no visitation. A memorial will be held at the convenience of the family, time and date TBD.

Donations may be made to Silver Creek Volunteer Fire Department, Doctors Without Borders, or the Salvation Army.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hole-Parker Funeral Chapel, 160 Central Ave., Silver Creek. To "be in touch" or share a remembrance or condolence, go to www.holeparkerfc.com.
