Charles Mancuso

Charles (Charlie) Mancuso, 91, of Fredonia passed away on June 11, 2017 at the home of his loving daughter, Rochelle, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Charles was born on April 13, 1926 in Sheridan to the late Jack and Rose Mancuso. He was a lifelong resident of Fredonia, growing up with his 10 brothers and sisters.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943 during WWII and was honorably discharged in 1946. He married the former Gertrude Legrano in 1948 at St. Anthony's Church in Fredonia. Charles was a two-time post commander of the American Legion Post 59 and was chaplain for many years. Charlie was also a fourth-degree member of the Knights of Columbus.

Mr. Mancuso was employed at Bedford's (which became Kraft), the Alco Plant, Red Wing, and finally, was a buyer for The Vineyard Restaurant.

Charlie was a 36-year veteran of the Pomfret Republican Committee, during which he ran for the County Legislature, Pomfret Town Board, and village trustee in 1999. He was an avid community volunteer as President of the Fredonia Little League, who was instrumental in the acquisition of the Eagan Complex on Clinton Avenue. He served the village of Fredonia Cable Advisory Board, whereby he helped negotiate a franchise agreement that resulted in increased fiberoptics for the local system. Charles was also a village of Fredonia Bingo Inspector. He was a former board director of the Senior Share Care Center and a member of the Chautauqua County Office of the Aging Service Advisory Board.

Charlie is survived by his daughter, Rochelle Hennessey and her two sons, Charles (Nicole) and Shawn (Casey) Hennessey. He is further survived by his loving four great-granddaughters, Victoria, Alexis, Cora and Kylian; and sisters, Mary Zappo and Carmine Gens. Besides his parents and his wife, Charles was preceded in death by his siblings, Joseph, Stanley, Gillis and Sam Mancuso, Phyllis Vandette, Rosanne Ciancia, Jenny Abenator and Lucy Mancuso.

Most of all, Charles Mancuso enjoyed life, people of all ages, and good conversation. He was a charismatic figure who will be missed by so many and cherished by his loved ones.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Anthony's Church at 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 15 with interment at St. Anthony's Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Mass and may call at the Fantauzzi Funeral Home, 82 E. Main St., Fredonia on Wednesday, June 14 from 5-8 p.m.
