Andres Mendez, age 86, passed away on Saturday, February 18, 2017 at the Chautauqua County Home surrounded by his loving family.
Andres was born on November 18, 1930 in Ponce, Puerto Rico to Manuel and Andreita Mendez. He moved to New York City at the age of 17, where he worked as a maintenance and groundskeeper until he moved to Dunkirk.
Andres' nickname was "The Godfather," and had a zest for life. He was often seen riding his scooter around, which he referred to as his "Cadillac."
Andres dedicated his life to helping others. He faithfully donated money to St. Jude's Hospital for children fighting cancer monthly. He had a heart filled with compassion and never hesitated to help anyone in need.
Andres was married to the love of his life, Rose "Rosie" Roque, who he now joins in Heaven for eternal life. As a couple, they radiated a powerful love for each other that was felt by all who knew them. Andres and Rosie often entertained others with one of their many comedic routines. They had a passion for dancing and were always first on the dance floor at any event.
Andres is survived by a daughter, Sylvia Hernandez of New York City; three sons, Andy Mendez of New York City, Tommy Roque and Ralphie Mendez, both of Dunkirk; and several nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, including his granddaughter, Jessica and Anthony Morales, who cherished, advocated and cared for Andres in his failing health.
Andres had 11 siblings, including his beloved sister, Lordes Mendez, who along with her daughter, Angie Diaz, devoted their love and time to him.
Along with his parents, Andres was preceded in death by eight of his siblings; his daughters, Andrea (Cookie) Mendez and Leticia (Letty) Roque; and a grandson, Angel Ramos.
Funeral services will be held Friday, February 24 at 1:00 PM in the McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home. Calling hours will be held Friday from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, two hours prior to the service. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
