Mary M. Meegan

Mary M. Meegan, 92, of Silver Creek died Monday morning, January 9, 2017 at TLC Lake Shore Hospital in Irving after a short illness. She was born in Buffalo on March 4, 1924, the daughter of the late Dennis and Cecilia (Cary) Hayes.

Mary was a graduate of Hutch-Tech High School, Class of 1942. She married Edward C. Meegan on July 24, 1948, and together they raised four children. Her life revolved around her family and her church, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Silver Creek. In her younger years, she volunteered at OLMC School and was a member of the Mother's Club, also helping out with bingo. In her later years, she was very active with the OLMC Senior Citizens Club and the Sacred Heart Senior Citizens Club in Orchard Park. Mary and Ed were adult chaperones for the Catholic Youth Organization and she was a Troop Leader for the Girl Scouts, when her children were growing up.

Mary enjoyed crocheting and knitting; she made many lap blankets for the members of St. Columban's on the Lake. She was a voracious reader, worked daily crossword puzzles to keep her mind sharp and loved to cook and bake.

Survivors include two sons, David (Rosalind) Meegan of Dunkirk and Timothy (Cynthia) Meegan of Westfield; two daughters, Maureen (Leo) Morabito of Silver Creek and Sharon (Larry) Westin of Brocton; three sisters, Patricia Muraco of Eggertsville, Doris (Stephen) Zatlukal of West Seneca and Carolyn (James) Hessinger of Hatsboro, PA; two brothers, Donald Hayes of East Aurora and Vincent Hayes of Naples, FL; nine grandchildren, Michael (Kristine) Morabito, Kevin (Stacey) Morabito, David Ehmke, Jason (Sarah) Ehmke, Daniel (Kathleen) Westin, Patrick Westin, Shawn (Haley) Meegan, Kaitlyn Meegan and Lindsey (Roy) Marvin; and five great-grandchildren, Collin and Bo Morabito, Fiona Keller, Ella and Claire Ehmke. In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Edward Meegan; four brothers, Dennis, Cecil and Francis Hayes and Leo O'Sullivan; and a sister, Dorothy King.

Relatives and friends may call at the Hole-Parker Funeral Chapel, 160 Central Ave., Silver Creek on Thursday, January 12 from 7-9 p.m. and Friday, January 13 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, January 14 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel R.C. Church, 135 Central Ave., Silver Creek at 11 a.m. Please assemble at the church.
