Grace Harris Grimes, "Amazing Grace," was born on May 17, 1917 in Philadelphia, PA and passed away peacefully on January 3, 2017 in Dunkirk, NY.
At 99 years old, she was known for her strength, kindness, and love of life. Spending most of her life in Fredonia, she attended the Fredonia High School on West Hill and then onto Normal School for training to be a grade school teacher. Wanting to teach physical education, she continued her education while working various teaching jobs and eventually obtained her BA in physical education at Ithaca College.
She was married in Korea in 1948 and later raised her two children, Jean and John, in her parents' house in Fredonia. She spent many years teaching, and once retired, she spent her long years of retirement exploring her hobbies such as traveling the world, bowling, sewing, crocheting, gardening and cheating at cards. Even at 99, she was always moving, whether she was going to church, attending garden club, taking exercise classes at the local senior center, volunteering at the local opera house or giving her time and money to those less fortunate; Grace did it all.
Grace is survived by her daughter, Jean (Edward) Lutz of Clarence; her grandsons, John LM Grimes of Lockport, Charles A. Grimes of Fredonia and James C. Lutz of Clarence; her granddaughter, Sarah (Eric) Sweitzer of Lancaster; and her two great-grandchildren, Owen and Evelyn Sweitzer. She is also survived by a wonderful extended family. Grace was preceded in death by her parents, Leslie Maxwell Harris and Bess Kerr Harris; her siblings; her son, John S. Grimes; and her granddaughter, Elizabeth A. Lutz.
A memorial service will be held at Family Church at 45 Lakeview Avenue, Fredonia, NY 14063 on Friday, January 13 at 1:00 PM. Private burial to follow. Arrangements by the Migliore Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Grace's memory to Fredonia Baptist Church, PO Box 322, Fredonia, NY 14063.
