Rita M. Lombardo

Rita M. Lombardo died peacefully at her home in Sarasota, Fla., on May 3, 2016.

She had recently celebrated her 92nd birthday with family and friends. She was a lifelong resident of Dunkirk and Fredonia up until her move to Florida last September, to be near family.

Mrs. Lombardo was an active member of the community, volunteering for numerous organizations including Girl Scouts, the American Cancer Society, Candy Striper program for Brooks Memorial Hospital (Chairman), Catholic Charities and St. Joseph's School for Exceptional Children. She was also very involved at Holy Trinity church as a lector, Eucharistic minister, choir member, the Women's Guild, Senior Citizens (past president), Outreach, and other committees.

After being a stay at home mom, Rita returned to the work force. She first worked at The Book Nook for eight years, which she loved as she was working with books and engaging with so many college students. From there she went on to work in the Media Center at BOCES where she remained until she retired in 1991.

She is survived by her children: Lesley Lombardo Fager (Harry) of Sarasota, Florida and Kirk S. Lombardo (Juli) of Hollister, CA. She was also loving Grandma to Josh Ferry, Skye Lombardo, and Abbey and Mitch Fager. She is further survived by many nieces and nephews here and across the country.

She is predeceased by her parents: Samuel Barone and Mary Giambrone Barone; brothers Anthony and Leonard Barone and her sisters Santa Genco and Josephine Sedola. She is also predeceased by the love of her life, her dancing partner, soulmate, and husband of 58 years, Samuel J. Lombardo.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass which will be celebrated Saturday, May 21, 2016 at 10 a.m. in Holy Trinity Church. Calling hours will be held today, May 20, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Tidewall Hospice, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238.
