Catholics across Western New York face a conundrum today. Valentine's Day and Ash Wednesday are both on the same day and for many of the faithful, that means no romantic steak dinner, or indulgent chocolates. Bishop Richard Malone of Buffalo said in an online video that Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are the only two days of the whole year on which fasting and abstinence are required. It's the first time since 1945 the two events have shared a day.
