Both the Senate and Assembly in Albany have passed legislation sponsored by area State Senator Cathy Young that would strengthen Kendra's Law and extend its provisions over the next five years. The legislation allows the courts to issue assisted outpatient treatment orders for individuals who will not voluntarily seek help for their illnesses, but are a safety threat to themselves and the public. Kendra's Law is named in honor of Fredonia native Kendra Webdale (pictured), who was pushed by a mentally ill person from a New York City subway station platform to her death in 1999.
