The Dunkirk High School boys basketball team, described by some as a "Jekyll-and-Hyde" team for their inconsistent play over the course of the regular season, brought its good, intense side into Friday night's Section VI Class B-1 quarterfinals against Springville and booked a spot in the semis. The Marauders (13-9) led almost the entire game and defeated the Griffins (14-7) by a score of 69-49 in a game broadcast on WDOE. Dunkirk led 16-12 at the end of the 1st quarter, then ballooned its lead to 36-20 at halftime. The lead grew bigger in the 3rd quarter, with the Marauders taking a 58-36 advantage into the final eight minutes. Springville began the 4th quarter on an 8-0 run, but could not get any closer than 14 points. Shamon Stewart (pictured) turned in a solid performance both on offense and defense and finished with a season-high 23 points in the winning effort and added 15 rebounds and three assists. Darnell Butts added 18 points, including 13 in the 3rd quarter, and Devaun Farnham chipped in with 11 points. For the Griffins, sophomore Mason Goodridge scored 17 points, including five three-pointers, and junior Tyler Kostelny had 14 points off the bench. Next up for the Marauders is a showdown against top seed East Aurora on Monday at 6:00 PM at Buffalo State College.
