Top law enforcement official urges safe use of sparklers

The sales and use of sparklers are legal in Chautauqua County, now that a local law has been approved by county lawmakers and County Executive Vince Horrigan. With the legalization of the sparkling devices, Chautauqua County Sheriff Joe Gerace expects injuries to increase. He is urging parents to make sure they supervise their children when using sparklers. The Consumer Product Safety Commission says sparklers can reach temperatures of nearly 2,000 degrees. Gerace says that can lead to severe burns if people are not careful...

Federal experts say that on average, about 230 people go to the emergency room every day with fireworks-related injuries in the month around the July 4th holiday.
