A 21-year-old man had to be rescued from Lake Erie Friday night after his kayak overturned. Chautauqua County Sheriff's officers were called to Van Buren Bay just after 8:15 PM and saw the boater about one mile off shore, clinging to his kayak without a life jacket on. Deputies say Andrew Amsler of Evans City, Pennsylvania got caught up in rough waters when his kayak overturned. A Sheriff's Water Emergency Team was able to rescue Amsler by guiding in a navigation boat from the shore. Amsler let go of the kayak and went underwater when the navigation boat arrived, but was rescued by one of the deputies on board. Amsler was transported to Dunkirk Harbor, where he was released to his family. He was ticketed for having no personal floatation device.
