Chautauqua Speaker Says Supreme Court Has Become More Politicized

A retired member of the U.S. Senate who was involved in the confirmation of five U.S. Supreme Court Justices says the high court had definitely become "more politicized." Texas Republican Kay Bailey Hutchison retired after her final term following four decades in politics. Hutchison was Friday's featured lecturer at Chautauqua Institution and spoke to the Supreme Court's two recent landmark decisions.  Regarding the Court's ruling on the Affordable Care Act, Hutchison says the nine justices said what they thought Congress meant, but it wasn't what Congress said, and she stated that the Supreme Court usually tries to interpret the law, but in that instance, they made law.  Hutchison did not speak to the ruling on marriage equality, but did say the justices are all "brilliant people," but have very different opinions on various issues.  Kay Bailey Hutchison spoke to conclude "21st Century Literacies: Multiple Ways to Make Sense of the World" week at Chautauqua.
