It's National Consumer Protection Week and the Better Business Bureau is still hearing a lot of complaints about phone scams in Western New York. People tell BBB they are getting calls from people claiming to be from the IRS, Publishers Clearing House and Microsoft. Others say they are getting calls from people telling them they were approved for a grant or that they won a foreign lottery. Peggy Penders says the IRS tax scam is especially troublesome.
Penders-IRS scam still causing problems
Penders says while many scammers have started targeting consumers using email and text messages, the telephone is still the weapon of choice because its easy and cost-effective. Penders says if you a call from a suspected scammer, just hang up. National Consumer Protection Week
