News of a $360,000 federal grant for the Dunkirk City Fire Department is good news for the city and for departments across the county. That's according to Dunkirk Fire Chief Keith Ahlstrom who says the funding will be used for a burn trailer simulator. The simulator will be used to train first responders in interior firefighting techniques. Ahlstrom says local firefighters currently have to travel to Jamestown to get the training.

Ahlstrom says while the Dunkirk City Fire Department was the lead agency, there was significant input from the county in landing the major grant. The funding, announced by Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand will come through the Department of Homeland Security's Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.
