State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli says so far in 2014, there has been an 18 percent increase in questionable income tax returns from this time last year. However, the majority of returns his office receives are approved. DiNapoli says more than 4.8 million returns have been filed, and only about 7,500 have been found to be improper filings. Around $24 million in questionable refunds have been stopped, with about two-thirds of that amount coming from taxpayers claiming ineligible refundable credits.
