Program on “The White Woman of the Genesee” to be Given at Anderson-Lee Library iCal

Monday, November 13 2017 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM

In honor of National Native American Heritage Month, Anderson-Lee Library in Silver Creek will welcome Marilyn Jemison Anderson who will share the story of her 6th great grandmother Mary Jemison. As a historical marker near Jemison’s place of birth in PA says, “In 1758, during the French and Indian War, a party of French soldiers and Shawnee took Mary Jemison from her home….Mary was adopted by two Seneca women. Jemison lived with the tribe and in 1762 traveled to their tribal home on the Genesee River. She was known as “the White Woman of the Genesee.” At war’s end, she was offered her freedom but chose to stay with the tribe.” All ages are invited to come and hear the story of Mary’s life with the Seneca people. In addition, books written about Mary will be available to borrow from the library system. Marilyn Jemison Anderson, 6th great-granddaughter of Mary Jemison, earned a B.A. in Sociology from D’Youville College and is the Vice President of the Iroquois Genealogy Society. Now retired, Marilyn enjoys sharing the history of her family. This program is free and open to the public and appropriate for all ages. Registration is helpful for planning seating.
